Every year, nearly 200,000 students apply for the IIT JAM exam. For each subject, around 15,000 to 30,000 students compete, and this year, the exam is scheduled for February 2, 2025.
In the last 20 days, there are a few key areas to focus on for effective preparation. Here’s how you can make the most of the remaining time:
Key Points for Effective Preparation:
1. Focus on Formula-Based and Basic Concept-Based Questions:
The IIT JAM syllabus is vast, and the best way to prepare is by practicing questions based on formulas and basic concepts. This approach will help you retain formulas more effectively.
Tip: Make short notes for revision or practice a variety of questions regularly.
2. Practice a Variety of Questions:
Many students often ask, "My course isn't complete yet. Should I focus on practicing questions?"
The answer is YES! Even if you haven't fully mastered a concept, practicing questions will help you understand how to apply those concepts. By reviewing solutions, you'll gain insights into how the concepts are applied, which will boost your understanding.
Tip: Keep practicing as much as you can.
3. Take Mock Tests Regularly:
It’s important to take mock tests consistently. We encourage students to practice 40 questions daily in DIPS classes. These mock tests will help improve your speed, accuracy, and exam strategy.
4. Improve Speed and Accuracy:
The exam provides 180 minutes (3 hours) for 60 questions, giving you roughly 3 minutes per question. Some questions may require heavy calculations, so it’s important to improve both speed and accuracy.
Tip: Revise your short notes regularly and practice to enhance your speed. The more you practice, the better you'll perform.
5. Approach for Different Question Types:
Different question types (MCQs, MSQs, and NT-type questions) require different strategies.
MCQs: These have negative marking, so it’s essential to be careful when selecting answers.
MSQs and NT-type questions: These do not have negative marking. NT-type questions, in particular, are often calculation-based.

6. Solve Previous Year’s Papers:
Solving previous years' papers is one of the best ways to prepare. Analyze the types of questions asked in various topics such as Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Group Theory. This will help you understand the pattern and difficulty level of the exam.
7. Join a Test Series:
If you haven’t enrolled in a full course yet, at least join a test series. A comprehensive test series with subject-wise and multi-subject tests will help you improve your problem-solving skills and give you an idea of the actual exam environment.
