Every Year, large number of candidates appears for the NET (National Eligible TEST). The test is conducted for awarding the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to Indian national students who are doing research or PhD from various Indian Universities and Colleges.

Both these tests are held two times a year, i.e. in the month of June and in the month of December. But students getting confused between CSIR~UGC NET and UGC~CBSE NET. Basically, there is no difference between these two exams, conducting body as they made for the same purpose to determine the eligibility criteria of students who are pursuing the exam, there is only one difference regarding the subjects involved in it. Let’s understand the difference between the two bodies in a detailed manner:

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) now conducts this exam, on behalf of UGC for the post of Lecturer and for providing the JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) to the Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and in research. Under UGC exam is conducted in streams such as Humanities, Arts, Commerce and Social Sciences etc.

CSIR~UGC NET
CSIR (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) is a premier national R&D organization which is also stands among the world’s largest publicly funded R&D organization. Exam Conduct by the CSIR named as CSIR UGC NET which is a national level of Exam in Science in the streams such as Life Science, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Planetary Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean.

JRF

JRF stands for (Junior Research Fellowship) fellowship of Rs 25000 per month, offered to both CSIR and UGC selected candidate, which is held twice in a year which is offered to pursue their doctoral studies.

Avenues for P.G. Students of Mathematics

CSIR-NET/JRF
CSIR-UGC hold a national eligibility test twice a year in the month of June and December for JRF and Lectureship (LS). Approximately 16000 students appear from Maths stream and among them approximately five hundred students awarded eligibility certificate from CSIR/UGC, which make them eligible for teaching in various degree institutions all over India. Meritorious students get JRF in which they enjoy scholarship of about 25,000/-per month and in addition annual contingent grant of Rs. 30,000/-better among them may get interview/ written call from CSIR for SPM (Shyama Prasad Mukherjee) fellowship and successful candidates get about 20,000/- per month as scholarship and a contingency grant of Rs. 70,000/-per annum.

The minimum qualification required is MA/M.Sc. with atleast 55% marks (For SC/ST 50% required) where as age limit for JRF is 28 yrs. which is relaxed upto 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST, women, physically handicapped and OBC applicants. There is no bar on age to qualify NET for Lectureship (LS). For more details log on www.csirhrdg.res.in

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)

MHRD holds Graduate Aptitude Test in the Engineering every year. For the eligibility for admission to post graduate programs with MHRD and other Government Scholarship in Engineering/ Technology /Architecture/ Pharmacy/Science.

The post graduate students of Mathematics can pursue M. Tech in Computer Science/ Industrial Mathematics/Information Technology/ Hydrology from l.l.T's and also research in Mathematics (Ph.D) having a valid GATE Score.

JEST
It invites Applications from  motivated students, with consistently good academic record, for enrolment in a Ph.D. Programme in  Mathematics / Theoretical Computer Science, at any of the following institutes:

(i)    Aryabhatta  Research  Institute of Observational  Sciences.  (ARIES), Nainital, for Astronomy.

(ii)   Harish-Chandra  Research  Institute (HRI), Allahabad, for Theoretical Physics, Mathematics & Astrophysics.

(iii)  The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc),Chennai, for Theoretical Physics, Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science.

(iv)   Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific  Research(JNCASR), Bangalore,  for  Experimental  and Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics, Statistical Mechanics and Materials Science.

(v)   National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Pune, for Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The minimum qualification for Research is M.A./ M. Sc. in Mathematics in related disciplines or the students who expect to complete their final examination by August of this year are also eligible to apply. Candidates applying for Ph.D. Programmes in all disciplines will have to appear for the JEST (written examination) in the relevant discipline using the JEST score each institute will call a limited number of candidates for its further selection procedure depending on its requirements.

For Mathematics at HRI/ IMSc, application forms can be obtained by writing to: The Registrar, Harish- Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Off G. T. Road, Chhatnag Road, Jhunsi,Allahabad - 211 019. Alternatively for Mathematics the application form can be downloaded from http://www.mri.ernet.in.
